BOHO CHIC OR HIPPIE CHIC?

Hello dear friends, I hope you're all doing grrrrrrreat!!! This week was one hot week!!! Oh my goodness, specially because my car went nuts the other day and so my dear uncle was kind enough to lend me his gigantic pick up truck that has NO AC!!! hahaha and NO MUSIC!!! hahaha Seriously I look hilarious in it, but it does the job well and therefore I can't complain. I actually like driving a pick up truck, the only problem is that I sweat like a truck driver in it and I end up smelling weird all day long hahaha.

Anyhow, enough nonsense. Yesterday a dear Facebook fan told me I should write about what's the difference between "Boho Chic" and "Hippie Chic". I thought it was a good idea and so I promised her I would definitely do it.

Some "Fashion Experts" have the audacity to affirm that basically the difference between Boho Chic and Hippie Chic is that hippies can't afford boho. However I don't quite agree because I don't like generalizations. The truth is that hippie is just one of the many bohemian styles out there. There's the bourgeois bohemian, the vintage bohemian, the ethnic bohemian, the pared-down bohemian, the rock goddess bohemian, and in the middle of all of those is the hippie style bohemian, which is a simpler, more natural, down to earth style, other bohemian styles can sometimes be a bit eccentric, flashy and over the top, and yes some hippies can't afford other bohemian trends.

Bohemian style in general is laid back, comfortable, unconventional, and most important, self expressive. Diane Von Furstenberg used to say: "You can't be a bohemian in tight clothes, it just doesn't work. You have to be able to move and dance and climb." Of course she's absolutely right, those are exactly the kind of activities bohemians would engage in.

For bohemians it is never, never about pouring themselves into the clothes someone else thinks they should wear. Bohemians are free-spirited outsiders who dress to please themselves instead of conforming. Bohemian style suits individualistic, creative, and unconventional lifestyles, hence why being a true bohemian is not for everyone, no matter what fashion magazines say, you need to embody the whole philosophy behind it. However I also feel compelled to clarify something: you don't need to be rebellious to be bohemian, you just need to be a bit more laid back, creative and self expressive.

Perhaps you're not the kind of person whose willing to dress bohemian from head to toe but you sure can add some bohemian element to your overall look. Since I don't want to make this any longer than it already is I'm going to concentrate only on hippie chic style, but be sure that I will be talking about other bohemian styles later on. Bohemian style is veeery fun and perhaps my favorite.

Hippie chic is a marketing product of the hippie movement from the 60's. Their clothes signified "Self Expression" and rebellion against following orders that made no sense, like for example being forced to fight in a senseless war like Viet Nam. Some of the elements that represent the true hippie style are:

-Peace signs.
-Tie-dye.
-Patchwork.
-Peasent blouses.
-Gypsy skirts.
-Tunics.
-Embroidered bags.
-Long hair.
-Little to no make-up.
-Flowers in your hair.

The interesting side of this is that there's a reason they chose to wear such things, not just because they where cool an stylish (like nowadays). For example, in the 60's all t-shirts where white, so a way to make them look cool and also rebel against something established was to tie dye them. There's a philosophy behind each and every one of this elements. If you're interested in adopting hippie style I highly recommend that you first do your research so that you can truly understand what the story behind it all is. Fashion is not just a superficial thing, like many people think, there's always a story behind it.

I came up with a hippie inspired outfit for you guys, and also selected some items for you to grab some inspiration from. I hope you like it, and stay tuned for more bohemian styles coming your way.

FASHION PHOTO SHOOT

OH MY GOODNESS!!! You have no idea how I feel right now about my teenage students!!! I know this might sound a bit corny but you know that feeling where you're so happy you feel like crying. This is how I felt this morning about the success of our teen fashion photo shoot. I'm so proud of the girls!!! They did such a great job!!!

I told you before I was teaching a summer course on fashion for teens, sort of like teen fashion boot camp. Today was our last day and to celebrate we had our own little fashion photo shoot. I created a setting for the girls, did their hair and took their pictures. The girls did their own makeup and styling. I'm happy to announce that I'm more than pleased with the outcome, the girls where very professional about it and took it extremely serious. The best part of all is that I HAD A BLAST WITH THEM!!! And they had a blast as well!!! I can't wait till we do it again!!!

Today I realized how much young talent there is out there. Check out some of the pictures I took of my very stylish ladies.

AMSTERDAM FASHION WEEK

Last week was FASHION WEEK in Amsterdam. When I found out my friend Patty who is living there was attending I asked her to please take some pictures for me to share with you. Most of the times we get to see pictures of NY, PARIS or MILAN FASHION WEEKS but we seldom ever get to see images of DUTCH FASHION WEEK, and quite frankly I like the dutch style a lot, very unconventional and doesn't follow any trends but their own. So from now on I've named Patty my Guatemalan correspondent in the Netherlands.

Thank you Patus!!! We are looking forward to more!!! You are our eyes in the Netherlands, and after that you'll be our eyes someplace else, until I'm able to be there myself.

There's Patty striking a pose for us, with her funky pants.

Don't you just want to be there right now???!!!

This design in particular reminds me a lot of Maria Cornejo.

IT'S MONDAY OUTFIT

I can't quite decipher Guatemala's climate, I always end up wearing the wrong thing and I'v been living in this country for 32 years. A couple of days ago I decided to wear something a bit more warm because outside it looked like it was going to be cold, by the time it was 3pm I was melting. Today I didn't know what to do, it might look like something but the weather always ends up surprising you.  So from now on I'll just wear whatever I want without regarding the weather, If it gets cold I'll wear a sweater, if it gets hot I'll take something off and if it rains and I'm wearing sandals then too bad for me.

SATURDAY AFTERNOON OUTFIT

On Saturday I met up with some of my friends at a just recently opened high end steakhouse restaurant called BRASSICA. It was another friends birthday and for such a casual gathering I decided to wear the following (originally I wasn't gonna wear the brown tights but then I noticed that the weather outside was a bit windy and thought it would be kind of risky not to wear them hahaha if you know what I mean).

A WHITE CASE

I don't know if it's purely coincidental or if it's perhaps a global fashion marketing strategy but it seems that white is THE thing right now for menswear. How do I know this? Am I just making this up? Sometimes I do make things up but this time I have evidence to back me up.

Yesterday I went to the pharmacy and decided to buy Esquire magazine THE BIG BLACK BOOK EDITION which I love because it's filled with images of extremely handsome men. Their first article is dedicated all to how to wear white this summer SEVEN WAYS TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF YOUR WHITES. Also this morning while I was visiting my favorite luxury online men's boutique MR PORTER, I found on this month's journal an article that was called ALL WHITE? I loved how they added a little humor to the article, following the title it says GETTING WHITE DONE ISN'T THAT SIMPLE (AS SOME GUESTS PROVED AT THE MONACO ROYAL WEDDING) hahaha and it's surrounded by images of some of the male guests wearing hideous white military uniforms. The world can sometimes be a bit ridiculous.

My point is that white is in gentlemen. You don't have to wear white from head to toe, if you haven't done it before you might end up looking like a dentist, but you could start adding some touches of white to your summer wardrobe, specially if you live or are traveling to a tropical place (bastards).

Here's some tips on how to pull it off successfully:

TIP #1 WEAR A WHITE JACKET

TIP #2 WEAR WHITE JEANS

TIP #3 WEAR WHITE SHOES (SNEAKERS, OXFORDS, WHATEVER)

TIP #4 WEAR A WHITE POLO SHIRT

TIP #7 WEAR A WHITE T-SHIRT

TIP #8 WEAR A WHITE BUTTON DOWN SHIRT

TIP #9 WEAR WHITE SUSPENDERS

Ok, I have to admit that some of this outfits are not really that summery but I couldn't help myself and got a little bit carried away. Anyhow, the guidelines are the same ones.

FARMERS MARKET FUN

Today I took mi niece Natalia to the once a month farmer's market at Saúl E. Méndez. When we got there it was still sunny but all of a sudden the sky got really gray and it started to pour down rain. However this didn't stop the fun, we found ourselves some shelter and waited for the rain to pass, which was like 5 minutes, that's the beauty of rain in Guatemala, it can rain super hard for like say 5 to 10 minutes and then all of a sudden the rain will stop and the sun will come out again. Needless to say we enjoyed ourselves together and Natalia had blast hanging out with the clowns and acrobats.

Here are some images of today's farmer's market fun, hope you like them and if you still haven't been to any of them I highly recommend that you do next time and bring all the family with you.
